Institution Builder's Perspectives on Culture:
Research indicates that managers who focus on building a great culture tend to give better financial and non-financial returns than those who merely drive performance.
What exactly is Culture?
Culture constitutes of organizational and team habits. They are the learned responses that bind people internally and define the rules of engagement with the external environment. The cultural DNA of an team consists of:
a) Core Values: These are non-negotiables that you would not compromise even if it hurts you. They represent the price that the organization and its employees are willing to pay for what they believe in. Core values in general do not change.
b) Key Success Factors associated with the business/ function: Every business and function have a reason for existence for its external/ internal customers. For example, the logistics industry operates on speed and reliability. So a company needs to build speed and reliability into it's culture to survive in that industry. Any marketing function's brand promise for other functions is to create a demand pull for the company's products and services. So marketing departments need to build a culture that promotes customer empathy.
c) The Company’s Differentiator: Every organization has a unique value proposition within the industry. This is commonly called the brand promise which every function and team need to align to. Values associated with the brand promise change over time as a company and the work teams need to reshape its culture accordingly.
d) The Team Differentiator: As a manager you bring in your non-negotiables and your personal vision to your team culture. If you have democratic orientation, you would factor your team members' cultural aspirations as well.
These four factors come to play in building a team culture.
Knowing what we will never change and what we will continuously change helps in building and rebuilding a robust culture that enables a manager to sleep well in the night as well as continuously reinvent the team culture to deliver value.
This workshop exposes you to the art and science of culture building. You will learn how to apply various culture frameworks to diagnose your current culture. preserve what is valuable and change what has become irrelevant. We shall make it easy through case stories and hands on learning.
As you proceed on your culture journey, you would realize that architecting a great culture is both easy and difficult. It is easy because you just need to look at yourself in the mirror and ask this question, 'If I had a choice would I love to work with this person? The difficulty lies in facing the mirror.
We hope that this workshop would help you to become a Culture Architect and build a high performing team that you are truly proud of.
