Longpi Black Pottery Showcase

 

Longpi Black Pottery is a dying art form that has not been able to reach the masses as well as other art forms. We are delighted to say that we are hosting a wide range of items made by one of the last communities that are in this field from Longpi Manipur.

This black stone pottery is made from weather rock & serpentinite found abundantly in the banks of the river in Longpi. It is mainly practiced by the Tangkhul community from the hill district of Manipur.

Unlike most other kinds of pottery, Longpi Hampai is not shaped on the potter’s wheel. The pots are manually shaped polished and sun-dried potters collect the products and heat them in a bonfire which takes a total of six days to be completed. The entire process is quite laborious the reason why the younger generation has stayed away from taking the legacy of this ancient art form forward. The women of Tangkhul the community does their bit to preserve it so this tradition goes on.

 

The design of these stone vessels makes them good looking and functional at the same time. The pot takes a while to heat up but at the same time retains the heat for a longer time than regular cookware. Its minimalistic style makes it elegant.
