Parenting and Student Learning in the Digital Era ( Online Workshop )

 

 Trust in voice, dialogue, argument, writing, and problem-solving is a strong starting point for the learning of skills. In their own learning, students become autonomous, where teachers assume the role of facilitators, leading them through their learning process. 

 

Concerns are the root cause of many twentieth-century developments. 

 

 It's necessary to prepare KIDS for an ever-changing future. Things are evolving at a very rapid pace in today's world.

As a passionate educator, former astrophysicist, and devoted faculty coach, Esther works with academic leaders to design and offer a variety of professional development opportunities for faculty to enhance teaching and learning. 

 

 Agenda: 

 

1 Fast pace and rapidly changing workforce  need to navigate the VUCA world 

• Jobs of yesterday are no longer needed (list some jobs) 

o Rote jobs have been replaced by computers and robots 

• New jobs are constantly created, but what is needed today will be obsolete tomorrow 

o Need to focus on skills rather than training for professions 

 

 2 People themselves and their thinking has changed 

a. Social media is rapidly changing our languages  

o Students do not read as much anymore 

o Slang, emoji, and abbreviations have taken over  

o Sentences are shorter and mimic speaking 

o Eloquent words are no longer used 

b. Attention span of people has changed 

o Continuous stimuli are needed  

o Hollywood movies responded and have taken the lead 

c. How we write while thinking has changed  

o Typing and correcting – as opposed to reflecting and then writing  

 

 3 The content of what students need to know and be able to do has changed 

• Data is readily available at the click of a finger 

o Memorization is no longer important 

o Instead need higher-order thinking 

 

 4 We (humans) are competing with technological innovations 

a. Need to understand our distinct human advantages over machines 

b. Need to distinguish ourselves from machines  

c. Need to excel in jobs computers cannot perform
