THABAL CHONGBA

About the Event
**Thabal Chongba** is a traditional folk dance of Manipur performed during the festival of **Yaoshang**, which is the Manipuri celebration of Holi. The term “Thabal” means moonlight and “Chongba” means dance, and together they signify “moonlight dance,” as the performance traditionally takes place in the evening under the open sky. During the dance, young men and women form a circle, hold hands, and move rhythmically to the accompaniment of folk songs and drums. It is not merely a dance but a vibrant cultural event that promotes social interaction, unity, and community bonding. Over time, modern musical elements have been incorporated; however, the essence of togetherness and celebration remains central to the tradition. Thabal Chongba continues to be an important expression of Manipuri cultural identity and youthful enthusiasm.
