Neeta Deshpande
Neeta Deshpande has been working in the field of handcrafted natural fabrics of India since 1992. Over the years she has successfully created an urban market for rural craft - presently working with over 15 states and hundreds of block printers, dyers, weavers and artisans. She runs Pune's pioneer natural fabric store – Banjaras. She firmly believes in breaking the stereotype of associating natural fabrics and handlooms with conventional Indian wear and sensitizing urban India to the rich Indian heritage of fabric art all under one roof, truly believing in the adage ‘Originality needs Courage’.
From a modest attempt at reviving fabric art in India this brand over the years has created waves by hosting some very successful events, shows and standalone exhibitions not just in Pune city but across the globe in places like France and Dubai. Fabrics sourced from Banjaras were used to create outfits for the Bollywood blockbuster and Oscar nominated film - Lagaan. The Banjaras story was featured in USA’s leading natural Fibre Magazine - Fiberarts in the summer edition of 2001. Banjaras was selected to be part of the prestigious ToI - Kala Ghoda Art Festival held in Mumbai in 2011. They also collaborated with FC Pune City as its Official "Ethnic Wear" Partner for season 2015 of the ISL- Indian Super League. In 2017, Banjaras associated with Mercedes Trinity Motors for a show aptly called “Masterpieces” showcasing one of its kind customized apparels on men and women of substance on the ramp, none of them being professional models, they were achievers and professionals from various walks of life.
